Obituary for Daniel Lawrence Engber

Rev. Daniel Lawrence Engber, 73, of LaGrange, died Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at Miller’s Merry Manor, LaGrange, IN.

Dan was born on July 26, 1944 in Columbus, OH to Michael and Evelyn (Barthlemas) Engber. He lived there until the age of five at which time he and his family moved to South Bend, Indiana where his father was employed by Pittsburg Plate Glass.

He graduated from New Carlisle High School in 1962 and attended Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio graduating in 1966 with a BA in History. He was awarded a Masters of Divinity from Hamma School of Theology, a division of Wittenberg in 1970. He was ordained a Pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America in November of 1970 at Bethany Lutheran Church in South Bend, Indiana.

Daniel served as a Pastor for 40 years at the following churches, Zion in Pershing, Indiana; Emmanuel Lutheran in LaOtto, Indiana; Zion Lutheran in Bristol, Indiana; Holy Trinity Lutheran in Harlan, Indiana and Lima Presbyterian in Howe, Indiana. He also served as Camp Director at Camp Lutherwald in Howe, Indiana for three years as well as Chaplain of the Indiana Girls School in Indianapolis for two years. He retired from active ministry in 2008.

Daniel loved the out of doors particularly South Twin Lake, Camp Lutherwald and the Pigeon River. He enjoyed boats and spent many happy hours on the water in a variety of watercraft.
He loved dogs and was in return loved by many dogs including his “besties”, Nun, Josh, and Scruffy who walked many miles alongside him.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, JoAnn (Jacob), his daughter, Jessica Anne Engber of Fort Wayne; his step-daughters, Jill (Sherman) Hostetler of LaGrange and Julie (Sherman) and her husband Troy Sharp of LaGrange; his granddaughters, Halle, Hope and Hillary Hostetler and Molly Sharp all of LaGrange; his brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Michael and Dr. Cheri Engber of Bloomington, Indiana; a sister, Deanna Engber of Austin, Texas; a brother-in-law, Andrew Purchrik of Concord, Mass.; nieces, Sara Engber-Cordes and Mark Cordes of Fairway, Kansas, Kim Engber and Fiancé, Jay Pfeiffer of Wichita, Kansas and Suzanna Engber of Austin, Texas and a nephew, Alex Puchrik of Concord, Mass.

His parents, and a sister, Deborah Puchrik precede Dan in death.

Calling will be held on April 21, 2018 from 9:30am until service time of 12:30pm at the Zion Lutheran Church, 20843 County Road 6, Bristol, Indiana, with a Lutheran Service of Memoriam to be held following the calling.

Officiants will be Rev. Steven Schwier and Mr. Marvin Middleton.

Memorials may be directed to the Camp Lutherwald in Howe, Indiana or the Zion Lutheran Church in Bristol, Indiana or the Alzheimer’s Association of America.
