Mr. Hawkins was born on May 3, 1936 in Sturgis, MI to Owen Ray and Lorema (Fetch) Hawkins.
Living in LaGrange, IN and Sturgis, MI for many years he returned to the area in 1982 from Des Moines, IA where he had lived since 1977. He attended the Bible Chapel in Sturgis, MI and the First Baptist Church in Elkhart, IN. During his youth he attended Pretty Prairie United Methodist Church in rural Howe, IN.
To many, Chuck was a genius mechanic and worked on many vehicles at his transmission and automotive center in Sturgis, Chuck's Transmission Shop. He had also worked as a maintenance supervisor at Bronson Precision Products in Bronson, MI, in the maintenance department at Multiplex in Howe, IN, in the engineering department with Frye Copy Systems in both Sturgis, MI and Des Moines, IA, and at the Meredith Printing Corporation in Des Moines, IA.
Mr. Hawkins served in the Michigan National Guard for many years. He was a member of the Aircraft Club of Coldwater, MI.
On July 20, 1957 at the Howe United Methodist Church in Howe, IN, he was married to Joan E. Kelly; Mrs. Hawkins survives in Elkhart, IN.
Also surviving are two sons, Hugh A. Hawkins of Omaha, NE and Howard A. Hawkins of Elkhart, IN; three grandchildren, Colby Hawkins, Alex Hawkins, and Katie Hawkins; a sister, Margaret Patterson of Burr Oak, MI; and a step-sister, Rita Frisbie of Sand Diego, CA.
Preceding Mr. Hawkins in death were his father, Owen Ray Hawkins; his mother, Lorema Starr; a sister, Betty Stutzman; a step-sister, Mary Buono; and a step-brother, Rex Starr.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Pretty Prairie Cemetery in rural Howe, IN.
Memorial may be made to either Pretty Prairie Cemetery or Gideon's International.
