Mr. Yunker was born on February 7, 1936 in Evansville, IN. to Dr. Philip E., MD and Mary E. (Matthews) Yunker.
In 1954, after graduating from Lima High School in Howe, IN., he served for three years with the United States Army as an instructor in the Pacific during the Korean War. He then graduated from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI.
Living many years in the Howe community, he owned and operated an insurance agency in the area from 1969 until 1995 when he retired. Before starting the insurance agency, he had worked for Continental National American and St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Companies.
Phil was an active participant of the Lima Methodist Church serving on the board of Trustees.
He was a former member and past president of the LaGrange County Hospital Board, LaGrange County Sheriff's Merit Board, Northeastern Independent Insurance Agents, Northeastern Professional Insurance Agents, Professional Insurance Agents of Indiana, and was a seven year member of the National Board of Directors of the Professional Insurance Agents.
He was active in many ways serving the communities in LaGrange County and St. Joseph County in the insurance and real estate business and served in many other capacities. He was a member and past president of the former F. & A.M. Blue Lodge #698 of Howe, IN., and was a current member of the Meridian Sun Lodge #76 F. & A.M. He was also a current member of the Scottish Rite, Mizpah Shrine Temple, and LaGrange County Shrine Club where he was currently serving as president. He had also been both a cub master and scout master of troops in Howe, IN. and been a director of the Singing Sands Girl Scout Council. He had also been a director of Lima Elevator, a four time director of Klinger Lake Country Club, and active for 16 years with the Howe Volunteer Fire Dept. where he had served as a director and as secretary. He was presently serving on the Lima Township board of directors.
On June 27, 1959 in Howe, IN. he married Dorothy H. (McKee); Mrs. Yunker survives in Howe, IN.
Also surviving are three daughters, Lisa (Don) Wixon of Canton, MI., Cheryl Yunker (Kerry O'Connor) of Springhill, Fl. and Kimberly (Jason) Shelley of Indianapolis, IN.; a son, Philip E. Yunker, III (Tara Gordon) of Indianapolis, IN.; three grandchildren, Henry and Alex Shelley and Bailey Wixon, two brothers, Paul W. (Martha) Yunker of Battle Creek, MI. and James D. (Dawn) Yunker of Cincinnati, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Suzanne Harrington, and two nephews.
A memorial service will take place on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Frurip-May Funeral Home, 309 W. Michigan St . LaGrange, IN. Pastor Kevin Brower will officiate the services.
Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Howe, IN.
A memorial visitation will take place on Friday, June 2, 2017 from 4-7 pm at the funeral home.
